GIUFFRIDA, REV. ROLAND-Baptist Clergyman. Born Montesant- angelo, Foggia, Italy, Aug. 9, 1887. Son of Matthew Giuffrida and Michelina Piroli. In America since 1907. Education: Technical school of Foggia, Italy; Yale School of Law and Colgate University Theological Seminary. Ordained in Meriden, Conn., where he founded the first Italian Baptist Church and was its pastor for five years. Served in World War I. He then became pastor for 16 years in Springfield and Monson, during which time he built the churches where he preached. On Aug. 30, 1924 he married Rose E. Raverta of Springfield, a graduate of American International Col- lege in social service. One son M. Roland, honor student at Clark Univer- sity, now in the U. S. Army. Rev. Giuffrida is a former chaplain of A. F. & A. M. Author of numerous articles of historical and religious nature. He is much in demand as lecturer on Italian problems in America, and is often heard on station WORC. His father, a noted high school teacher of his native city for 40 years, had the following children: Rolando; Romeo, a professor, Michael, army major, Angelo, Ernest and Emilio are all serving in the army. Chanlain in U. S. Navy since March 16, 1944. Was on board of U. S. carrier which was sunk in the historical battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines Oct. 15, 1944, picked up at sea unconscious from loss of blood and with badly fractured jaw following the explosion of the St. Lo off Samar. Came to America in 1889 and lived in Providence. Moved to New Bedford in 1902, where he began the baking business in a small way. In 1909 Caesar Giusti joined him in the business later Ferdinando Baccelli, Frederick Giusti and James Hargraves became associated forming in 1916, the Giusti Baking Co. Inc. The volume of business in 1945 was over a million dollars employing 160 people, supplying New Bedford and surrounding territory with complete baking service. Mr. Giusti married Luisa Castagnoli of New Bedford June 1, 1910, a native of Florence, Italy. Children: Elizabeth, married to George Aulizio; Giuliette, married to Russell A. Chairman of the rationing board. Member: N. E. Bar Assn., Woburn Country Club and Order Sons of Italy. His father came to U. S. in 1903 settling in Woburn, engaged in various occupations. Had the following children: Joseph; Sophie, a graduate of Regis College is teacher at Woburn Junior High School; Vito J., is in U. S. Navy Coast guard; Arthur J., is veteran U. S. S. forces; Vincent E., graduate of Cathedral High and David J., Ernest J., Raymond L., Margaret R., students. Mr. Gotta is member of Italian Amer- ican Citizen's Club; Ludlow Fish and Game Club. GOVI, JOHN H. (Mrs.)-(Mary L. Vacchino) Born Villareggio, Torino, Italy, June 23, 1889. Daughter of Joseph Vacchino and Teresa Parino. At- tended public school in her native town. Came to America in 1902 settling in Plymouth. Married late John H. Covi, Jan. 5, 1911. He was the son of Antonio Govi and Domenica Elefante, who was born in Bibbiano, Reggio Emilia, Italy, Sept. 14, 1886. Came to America in 1907, lived in Middleboro later in the custom tailoring business in Plymouth for 25 years. He was one of Plymouth's most outstanding citizens and took deep interest in the welfare of his community. Member B. P. O. E., and Vespucci Club. Had the following children: Laura, graduate Burdett College, is married to Hiram C. Ryder; Rose, married to Harland B. Fletcher; Teresa, dental technician, is married to Essio Fortini; and Alice, beauticianist, is married to Francis P. Shea, a corporal paratrooper in U. S. Army.
