Attended the public school of his native town. Came to America in 1908 settling in Boston where he learned the art of cooking. In the service of Hotel Continental since 1935. Married Rosalie Gian- banco, April 19, 1925. Children: Catherine, Charles, Mary, Salvatore and Rosalie. Mr. Balsamo served in the American Army during World War I and saw service in France. Mr. Balsamo has been outstanding in the field of athletics. Was captain of football team, Adams Hillsides A. A. in 1933. Member of wrestling and swimming teams at Worcester Y. M. C. A. and at Boys' Club. Member: Watchusetts Country Club golf team; American Legion; Veteran of For- eign Wars; Holy Name Society. His father was born in Naples, Italy. Came to America in 1912 settling in Worcester, where he engaged in market business, now carried on by his son, Anthony. BALSAMO, JOSEPH AMERICO (Prof.)-Composer, piano teacher, and pianist. Born Lawrence, Sept. 22, 1913. Son of Joseph Balsamo and Grace Petralia. Graduated from Lawrence High School in 1931. Attended New

England Conservatory of Music. While there he studied piano under Gesus Maria Sanroma. Teacher of piano in Lawrence since 1935. Affiliated teacher and member of the Sherwood Music School extension dept., Chi- cago. Heard on own programs, station WLAW every Sunday morning since 1939. Has played in concerts throughout New England. Pianist for the Lawrence Alumni Symphony and its soloist on several occasions. Is con- sidered one of the most outstanding young Italian American pianists in the state. Member: MacDowell Club of Boston; Chadwick Club and the Lawrence Italian College Club. Fond of travel, art, reading, photography, and records collector. His father was born in Catania, Italy. Came to America in 1911 (a former band musician) settled in Lawrence. BALSAMO, MARIO-Teacher of Pianoforte and voice. Born Catania, Italy, Oct. 8, 1905. Son of Joseph Balsamo and Grace Petralia. Came to America in 1916 settling in Lawrence. Began study pianoforte while at- tending public schools. In 1923 he went to Naples, Italy, and continued his pianoforte studies under Giuseppe Schipa, composition under Gennaro Napoli, and esegesi Palestriniana under Giovanni Tebaldini, the teacher of Ilebando Pizzetti. In 1927 he was awarded diploma in pianoforte and in 1930 diploma in composition from the Royal Conservatory of San Pietro a Maiella in Naples. Teacher of pianoforte and voice in Lawrence since 1931. Author: Chamber music for orchestra, for chorus, and a comic opera in two acts. His compositions are regarded outstanding and have been played by the State Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in Boston; in the University of New Hampshire. His famous Requiem Mass, in memory of Marconi, for four soli, chorus, and orchestra was performed in 1940. Member of Chadwick Club and Italian College Club. Associated with Mr. Balsamo is his brother, Joseph A., whose sketch also appears in this book. Res .: 10 E. Haverhill St., Lawrence.
