Handled many diplomatic dealings with several foreign govern- ments friendly to the U. S. Government. Counsel for many hotels in Boston and New York. Served in quartermaster's dept. in World War 1. Among founders, and organizers of Mt. Auburn, Cambridge, Middlesex County-Re- publican Clubs, and Republican Club of New England. Has won distinction in many sports including dancing and horse-back riding. His father, born in Naples, mother in Rome. Both came to America in ,1880 settling in Boston. Graduated from Winchester High School. First American of Italian descent in Winchester to enter the service of the police dept. in 1928. Sergeant since June 24, 1936. Married Concetta Ferina April 17, 1926, a graduate of Winchester High and former bank clerk. Children: Joseph J., Jr., born Aug. 8, 1928; Robert A., born Nov. 10, 1935; and Made- line, born Nov. 2, 1936. Member: Order Sons of Italy; Past President and Treasurer of local police relief association. His father came to U. S. in 1905 settling in Winchester, in the employ of Water Dept. Has the fol- lowing children: Anthony, general contractor; Joseph John; Mrs. Santina Maggio; James J .; Mrs. Angelina Di Minico; Albert, Veteran U. S. Army World War II awarded the purple heart; Mrs. Mary De Luca; Mrs. Ida Gentile; and Virginia. Res .: 433 Washington St., Winchester.


DA RU, PETER J .- Art Director, "Boston Post". Born Pozzale, Belluno, Italy, Jan 4, 1883. Son of Dionizio Da Ru and Maria Toscani. Educated here and abroad. Came to U. S. in 1894 settling in Boston. In the service of Boston Post since 1903. Pioneer Italo-American of Boston employed on the "Post". Married Emma Locatelli of Somerville, Dec. 14, 1907. Chil- dren: Ernest, a graduate of Boston Museum of Fine Arts, U. S. Army; and Mario (Suffolk School of Law .and Bryant Stratton College). Mr. Da Ru studied voice under Professor Roberto Vanni for seven years. Organized his own opera company-International Opera Co., and toured the U. S., Can- ada, Mexico, South America and Australia. Father, came to America in the late 80's settling in Boston, engaged in decorating and in portraiture. Res .: 10 Baker Ave., Lexington.


DATTOLA, ROCCO THOMAS-Director of South End Community Center of Springfield. Born Greenwich, Conn., March 13, 1915. Son of Rocco Dattola and Mary Morgante. Graduated from Greenwich High School in 1934 and Springfield College in 1938, B.S. Director of South End Com- munity Center for boys and girls, 80% of whom are of Italian extraction, since 1942. Formerly director of Niagara Falls Boys' Club, N. Y. Married Ella Haroney of Niagara Falls, N. Y., a former public school teacher, April 17, 1941. One daughter-Dolores Anne, born June 10, 1942. Mr. Dattola was member of his college varsity football team (quarterback) and captain of the track team. His father was born in Calabria, Italy. Came to America in 1898 settling in Greenwich, Conn., where he engaged in grocery business over 40 years. Had following children: Samuel-in U. S. Army; Philip- in U. S. Army Transport Service; Charles-a high school teacher; Millie- married to Pasquale Pitocco; Rocco-of above sketch; Domenic-a graduate of Lehigh University, and Vincetta, married to Michael Salvatore. 7 Litchfield St., Springfield, Mass.

D'AURIA, AMEDEO-Tailor, R. H. White Co., Boston. Born Formia, Littoria, Italy, April 8, 1882. Son of Leone D'Auria and Natalina Desiderio. Attended public school in his native town, where he also learned custom tailoring. Came to U. S. in 1901 settling in Boston. In the service of R. H. White Co. since 1926. Formerly in the tailoring business for number of years. Married the late Assunta Ciarlante Aug. 6, 1906. Children: Mrs. Adalgisa Nolan; Mrs. Ortenza Willett; Mrs. Dorothy Hubbard; Mrs. Juditta Ferovito; Hugo, U. S. Navy Yard employee; Amedeo, is in U. S. Navy, seaman 1c., and Carmela. All of whom are graduates of Arlington High School. Mr. D'Auria is member Order Sons of Italy. Has two sisters: Mrs. Civita Caterino of Arlington, and Mrs. Erminia Caporicci of Phila- delphia.
