VITALE, ANTHONY-Saxophonist and Clarinetist. Born Boston, Dec. 19, 1912. Son of Anthony Vitale and Anna Arminio. Graduated from Brighton High School in 1933. Began to study music at the age of 15, later, under Emiel Arcieri of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Vitale is considered among the finest players of the saxophone and clarinet in the bay state. Has travelled throughout U. S. and Canada with well known bands. Now playing at Hotel Torraine with Pat Sands orchestra. Mar- ried Nicolina Capodilupo of Boston, April 23, 1939. She is a graduate of Portia Law School and a former distinguished attorney of Boston. Mr. Vitale is member of Musicians Union and former member of his high school baseball team. His father was born in Citogna, Avellino, Italy. Came to U. S. in 1895 settling in Boston, engaged in the mfg. of neckwear for over 30 years. Res .: 109 Prince St., Boston.

Fond of baseball, hockey, boxing, football and music. Father, born in Larotta, Avellino, Italy. Came to U. S. in 1896 settling in Boston, engaged as blacksmith for over 27 years. VITALE, SILVIO NAPOLEONE-Chief Artist, Executive Staff, R. H. White Co., Boston. Born Boston, July 27, 1910. Son of Silvio Vitale and Josephine Alcieri. Graduated from Dorchester High School in 1928 and studied under private instructors. On four year scholarship at Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Continued his studies at the Regia Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Italy, 1928-34, where he received his professor's de- gree. On his return to U. S. he took part in several exhibits. Considered outstanding in the field of art display. Director of art display at R. H. White Co. since 1940. Mr. Vitale is also a fencing master. Won the three weapon championship for three years, and president of Boston Fencing Club for two years. His father was born in Apricena, Foggia, Italy. Came to U. S. in the early 90's settling in Boston as banker. Later was Italian Royal Vice-Consul for New England in Boston for 27 years and president of Dante Allighieri Club. A writer and poet of distinction. VITERBI, ACHILLE-Surgeon Oculist and University Professor. Born Mantova, Italy, Dec. 22, 1881. Son of Eugenio Viterbi and Zelia Tedeschi. Graduated from University of Turin, 1905, M.D. (cum laude). Lecturer at Royal University of Parma in Ophthalmic Surgery, 1913-1939. During World War I was lieutenant, later captain. Consulting oculist and surgeon of the 3rd army, 1915-18. Promoted Lieutenant Colonel in 1938. Won national competition in 1918 as chief physician of the Ophthalmic Clinic of Bergamo, Italy, which he designed. Awarded Cross of the Italian Crown.

Mr. Volpe is member of Chamber of Commerce, charter member of Rotary Club and past exalted ruler of B.P.O.E. His father, a native of Elena Gaeta, Italy, came to U. S. in 1875. Was a pioneer Italian American settler of Somerville. Established his general fruit business in 1885. Had following children: Angelo, John, Frank (attorney), and Lena. VOLPINI, JOHN-Born Rome, Italy, Oct. 31, 1882. Son of Edoardo Volpini and Margherita Paciosi. Educated at Collegio Sant'Apolinare of Rome. Came to U. S. in 1907 settling in Southbridge. In the service of American Optical Co. since Sept. 6, 1907. Holds the pioneer gold pin from the Co., and is member of the Quarter Century Club. Married Giuditta Chiocca of Southbridge, Feb. 3, 1913, a native of Ponzanello, Carrara, Italy. Children: Ferdinand, a foreman at American Optical Co .; Renato, press operator at American Optical Co .; Emma, married to Lawrence Du Paul; Ida, a graduate of Springfield Marcy Hospital, and Mary. All the children graduated from Mary E. Wells High School. Mr. Volpini is former president of Italian American Citizens' Club; treasurer of Italian Ameri- can Associates; three times venerable of Order Sons of Italy in America, and grand trustee of Mass. Grand Lodge in 1924-25. Member of Eagles and of the Republican Town Com'tee since 1924. Active in civic and poli- tical affairs. Res .: 144 Elm St., Southbridge.


VOLTA, HAROLD SEBASTIAN-Proprietor, Volta Home and Auto and Volta Oil Co., 35 Main St., Plymouth. Born Plymouth, Jan. 20, 1909. Son of Charles Volta and Caroline Longhi. Educated in the public schools. In business since 1930. Married Lucy Valenziano of Plymouth, April 19, 1938, daughter of Vincenzo Valenziano and Maria Mazzilli. One son, Harold Joseph, born Sept. 23, 1942. Member: Elks, Plymouth Italian Mu- tual Aide Society, Cordage Men's Club, Vespucci Club and Plymouth Coun- try Club. Is a piano player and former leader for number of years of his band under the name of "Hal Volta Orchestra" which played throughout New England and in New York. Mr. Volta's father was born in Renazzo, Ferrara, Italy, Oct. 17, 1879. Came to U. S. in 1887, was among the pioneer Italian settlers in Plymouth.
